In the Mood for Love

In the Mood for Love was an amazing movie! I am still fascinated by the songs in its sound track which I listen to time and again and I would definitely recommend the movie to all who has not seen it.

The name of the movie almost always takes me to a cafe in İstanbul overlooking one of the most beautiful sceneries in the city. The cafe is named Aşşk Cafe which literally means the Love Cafe. But please note that aşk in Turkish is more than love. It is more like the Eros in ancient Greek thought unlike Agape or Philos. The name Aşk is derived from the Arabic origin referring to an intense love that burns the soul. Note that the word aşk (intense love) and sarmaşık (ivy) come from the same origin.

The cafe is situated in Kuruçeşme by the Bosphorus and its entrance would never attract the attention of those who do not know the place. It is a rather cosy cafe by the sea side with an amazing view. It is one of the few places that could stand the test time and has been serving İstanbulites till 1997.

It is a great location for breakfast, an afternoon tea or a casual date! Aşşk Cafe is extremely popular so make sure to make a reservation beforehand as your chances of finding a place to sit might be really low especially in spring and summer!

When you visit the Cafe, you will notice that its mood is unlike that of the movie. Unlike the melancholy of In the Mood for Love, the cafe has a joyful spirit, perfect for new lovers!
