Camerata Baroque Istanbul

In a city as hectic and chaotic as Istanbul, there is so little that ‘soothes’ the soul. Music is one of those few remedies for the soul in this city. But when you listen to the sounds of contemporary Istanbul, it is a constant cacophony. The music you encounter in taxis, stores and streets is distasteful noises of either low quality pop or arabesque music, Unfortunately, the city is plagued with sound pollution.

I am fascinated with baroque music which is my best remedy for a broken heart, a stressful day or as a tool of meditation. It is like a breath of fresh air in the midst of the constant rush of modern life in Istanbul. If you are a baroque lover and would like to listen to a baroque concert, here is a talented group of young artists who have gotten together and formed a group called ‘Camerata Baroque Istanbul’.

The group was formed in 2011 by Ceren Gurkan who is the head violinist of the group .

The group has concerts in one of the most magical places in the city like churches of a long forgotten past with very small communities but which stand against the test of time.

Here is one at the Crimean Church in Beyoglu built in the name of all those British soldiers who fought on the side of the Ottomans but lost their lives.

Now, let’s lend an ear to these talented young artists and allow them to transform us to a world before us.
