They say that a klezmer musician cries with one eye and laughs with the other.’
I have recently discovered an amazing group made of International artists from five different countries located in Istanbul. The name of their ensemble is Istanbul Klezmer Kapelye, keen on interpreting the traditional Yiddish music repertoire with a passion to create a unique Istanbul flavor of klezmer.
Only through them, I learnt about ‘Klezmer which is high energy dance and party music traditionally performed by the musicians of the Jewish diaspora who lived and traveled across central and Eastern Europe. The music echoes sounds from many regions under the influence of the Ottoman Empire, such as the Balkans, Romania and Moldavia, as well as Ukraine, Crimea and many more. It often features songs sung in Yiddish, the Eastern European Jewish language (an amalgam of Middle High German, Aramaic, Slavic, Hebrew, and Romanic influences).(istanbulklemzer.com)
