Although I am a fan of the cultural scene in Beyoğlu, I have had a chance to discover Meşher only by mere chance recently. Meşher is an exhibition hall that hosts unique exhibitions dwelling around the theme of İstanbul. It is located in the heart of Pera and very close to Tünel. The exhibition I have had a chance to see was about the panorama of İstanbul in the last five centuries. The richness of the collection was stunning.

I was also curious to learn what the name Meşher referred to it. I learnt that it comes from the word ‘teşhir’ derived from the Arabic root which means to display and Meşher simply meant a venue for display which was a word commonly used during the Ottoman Era.
I have recently learnt that there is a new exhibition currently on display at Meşher which is ‘The Story Unfolds in İstanbul’ and it ‘sets its focus on representations of Istanbul produced over various periods and literary genres from the 16th century to the present day. You can visit the exhibition everyday between 11.00–19.00, except Mondays.‘ (from Meşher.org)
