Kadiköy Sessions Orchestra

Kadıköy Sessions Orchestra is a vibrant community‑based music ensemble that emerges from the Kadıköy Sessions initiative, a creative music culture project rooted in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul. The project began in 2020 as a series of jam sessions organized by musicians and artists, including violinist Gabriel Meidinger and filmmaker Stephan Talneau.

Initially small gatherings where local and visiting musicians improvised together, these sessions quickly grew into a larger cultural platform embracing diverse musical traditions. From these collaborative roots emerged the Kadıköy Sessions Orchestra, a loosely formed ensemble bringing together musicians from various backgrounds to create performances that blend styles, languages, and folk traditions.

Rather than functioning as a fixed‑membership orchestra, it is a fluid collective, a platform where musicians gather, share, and reinvent music in ways that reflect Istanbul’s lively and diverse cultural spirit. The ensemble performs arrangements drawing on Anatolian, Middle Eastern, Balkan, and improvised music. With sometimes 60 or more players, it offers open‑air concerts and recordings of pieces such as Halê Ma Rê / Herê Lê Lê and Mustafa’m Zeybeği. Their approach blends collective creativity and cultural exchange, bringing together musicians from different countries and traditions, making performances feel like a meeting place of global sounds.
