Within the midst of Kadıköy’s chaos, far from the madding crowd for those souls looking for a moment of solace is the Surp Takavor Gregorian Armenian Church. Its door is almost always half open, as a reminder that one can ‘seep in’ for contemplation, prayers or simply as a refuge.

I have had a chance to visit the Church during a sunday mass and had been lured by the heavenly voices of its choir. The Church also has a small chapel for those of us who want to light candles anytime during the day.

The Church’s history goes back to the 18th century but the current building is from 19th century due to earthquakes and fires that destroyed the former buildings.
Although there is a small minority of Armenians in modern day Istanbul, it is a delight to know that this Church is alive and well. I would highly recommend you to visit the Church for a sunday mass.
I have recently learnt that Surp Takavor Choir has been singing in the weddings and funerals of the Armenian Community held in the Church as well as giving concerts for decades with their repertoire of Armenian Choir music.
