Adile Sultan Palace: from Summer Palace to a Dream House

Adile Sultan was a member of the Ottoman Family. She was the daughter of Mahmud II and the sister of Abdulmecid. Both of these sultans were the most progressive among the Ottoman Dynasty who passed progressive laws and brought practises to modernize and reform the Empire.

She was a poet and was the first sultan to have her poetry printed. She had a tragic life with the loss of her husband and her four children which was reflected in her lines of poetry.

Adile Sultan (1826-1899)

Only high ranking Ottoman women could own real estates as Adile Sultan was the daughter of the Sultan, she had a beautiful palace overlooking the Bosphorus. The palace was given as a present by her brother Sultan Abdulmecit and was used as a summer palace by Adile Sultan. She donated her summer palace to the Ministry of Education in 1868 and the building took the name: Kandilli Adile Sultan Girls Boarding School. The school was the first boarding school for girls in the Empire. My grandmother were one of the students of this school after the establishment of the Republic.

The View of Adile Sultan Palace

The building burnt down in 1986 to the ground and was restored to its full glory in 2006.

Now, it serves as a restaurant and glorious venue for receptions, weddings and special occasions. It has a stunning view. The decoration of the interior is very elegant and the staff is kind.

When you plan a trip to Istanbul, consider crossing to the Anatolian side and climb the hills of Kandilli to see this beautiful 19th century summer palace with a stunning view of the first female poet with a divan (poetry book).

The view of the Borsa Restaurant which is a part of the Palace

It is one of my best spots for lunch or dinner. You will be stunted by the view and be amazed by the richness of the cuisine. Borsa Restaurant inside Adile Sultan Palace is one of the best restaurants in Istanbul that serve traditional tastes.

There is also a rich collection of Turkish painters on the walls of the restaurant and on the corridors of the palace on the way to the restaurant.

So do yourself a favour and enjoy the summer palace of this late Ottoman princess.
