There are incredibly beautiful examples of Ottoman hammams in Istanbul. Most are only visited by tourists. As modern homes enable even the poorest to have running water in their homes, visiting hammams became a luxury and an eccentricity. And many hammams are very expensive for locals.
Let’s look at the finest examples of the hammams in Istanbul. The one on the top of the list would be Hürrem Sultan Hammam. Hürrem Sultan was the first official wife of any Sultan. She was married to the most powerful man of his time: Suleiman the Magnificent. Originally a former slave, she rose from the status of an ordinary concubine in the harem to the head of the harem and love of Suleiman the Magnificent. The hammam itself has been wonderfully renovated, a delight to be in and a paradise like experience to bath in. Hurrem Sultan Hammam – Male section
Another fascinating example of Ottoman hammams is the Kılıç Ali Pasa Hammam. Kılıç Ali Pasa was a former war slave of Italian origin. He rose to the highest ranks of the Ottoman military and became a Pasha. He had a mosque and a hammam constructed in his name. His mosque is a small replica of Hagia Sophia and his hammam is elegantly constructed and recently restored.

One last example is the Cahaloglu Hammam constructed in 1741, the “newest” of all the hammams we have talked about. It is a rather cozy hammam. There is a surprise to the hammam complex. There is a recently opened restaurant which serves food on the top of the building in spring and summer.
