Duman, an Istanbul‑based Turkish rock band formed in 1999, has become one of the most influential voices in modern Turkish music.
I have an obsession with Duman’s love songs which I find highly mesmerising. Any of Duman’s love songs touch a very deep cord me, igniting either grief, longing or the sense of disillusionment born out of love. On the surface, their sound, with distorted guitars, echoing basslines, and grunge-inspired rhythms feels distinctly Western. Yet beneath this sonic exterior, their lyrics and sentiment are profoundly Turkish. Their lyrics speak of love as a force that can heal, fracture, and haunt.
