On 2 and 3 September, Fazıl Say returns to Istanbul with his new project, the Fazıl Say Jazz Quintet, for two consecutive nights at the Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theatre. Say Plays Jazz brings the expressive depth of classical music into conversation with the freedom and unpredictability of jazz.
Joining Say on piano are Ezgi Alaş on vocals, Aslıhan And Say on flute, Serdar Barçın on saxophone and Ferit Odman on drums. Conceived as an uninterrupted musical journey, the concert moves through eighteen interconnected pieces, including new compositions and fresh arrangements of works such as Kara Toprak, Paganini Jazz, Achilles from the Troy Sonata, and settings of poems by Murathan Mungan, Can Yücel and Haydar Ergülen.
So this is a call to Istanbul: come and hear familiar melodies loosen their boundaries, classical forms open themselves to improvisation, and five musicians create something that can exist only once in the warm night air of Harbiye.
