Boji, the beloved street dog of Istanbul, became an international symbol of the city’s unique relationship with its stray animals. First noticed in 2021, the large mixed-breed dog gained fame for his unusual habit of riding public transportation on his own. Security cameras and curious passengers captured him traveling across the city by ferry, metro, tram, and even the Marmaray line beneath the Bosphorus. According to municipal data at the time, he was covering dozens of kilometers a day, calmly navigating stations and choosing seats like an experienced commuter.
City officials fitted Boji with a tracking device to monitor his movements and ensure his safety. They discovered that he was regularly visiting neighborhoods on both the European and Asian sides, from the historic streets of Eminönü to the lively quarters of Kadıköy and various waterfront districts along the Bosphorus. Passengers shared food with him, took photographs, and followed his daily routes on social media. He quickly became a symbol of Istanbul’s warmth and its long-standing tolerance toward stray animals.
Istanbul has a deeply rooted culture of coexisting with street animals. In neighborhoods such as Cihangir, Kadıköy, Kuzguncuk and Balat, residents commonly leave out bowls of water and food, considering stray dogs and cats part of the local community. This tradition reflects centuries of urban life in which animals have shared public spaces with people and have often been protected rather than removed.
In recent years, government policies aimed at removing stray dogs from the streets and placing them in shelters have caused widespread sadness among animal lovers. Many residents feel that such measures risk disrupting the delicate balance between humans and animals that has defined the city for generations. For those who grew up seeing dogs resting in parks, outside shops, or near ferry docks, the shift in policy has been deeply emotional.
Boji’s story, however, concluded on a hopeful note. After months of public attention, he was adopted into a private home by a prominent businessman in Istanbul, where he now lives in comfort and safety. While many Istanbulites miss encountering him on their daily commute, there is reassurance in knowing that he has found warmth and care. His journey, from anonymous stray to urban icon to cherished companion remains a powerful reflection of Istanbul’s enduring love for its street dogs.
