I am always amazed to see how much Istanbul has changed over the years each time I see traces of old İstanbul in a movie or on a photo or a post-card. And the movie L’immortalle is one of those movies that remind me how little has remained of old İstanbul. The movie was made by French and Italian producers in 1963 and the story takes place in Istanbul. The script was written by the famous French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet.
The movie depicts İstanbul in a surreal manner. It is like a documentary of old İstanbul with its tranquil hills and Bosphorus, its mystical atmosphere surrounding mosques, traditional neighbourhoods and cemeteries. The city I see in the movie has no resemblance to the city I live in.
