Edward Lord Weeks, an American painter renowned for his impressionistic landscapes and architectural scenes, visited Istanbul in 1890s, when the city’s vibrant fusion of cultures offered endless inspiration. Captivated by the interplay of light on the domes and minarets, the bustling streets, and the shimmering waters of the Bosphorus, Weeks sought to capture the city’s unique atmosphere in his sketches and paintings. Through his art, Weeks documented 19th century Istanbul with its streets, markets, monuments and people.
Glance through Weeks’ paintings that take us back in time where there were sweet waters, tranquil gardens and lovely mansions in Istanbul! That is ‘once upon a time’, long before Istanbul was dominated by steel and cement.
